DAY 1 | SAN FRANCISCO TO SANTA CRUZ – 85 MILES
Wednesday 4th Oct
Depart the hotel en masse in a sea of red and make our way through the heart of the city to Goodby Silverstein & Partners for what has now become our official breakfast send-off event. (Special thanks and much love to them for their support from the beginning!) After some much needed coffee and inspirational words of encouragement from Rich and his team, we’re back on the bikes and headed west. This is the most traffic we’ll see for the next 550 miles. Through Chinatown and some amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Classic SF stuff as we head for the coast. 7 miles through morning commuters and out of nowhere it comes into view- the Pacific Ocean. She will be our chaperon for the next 6 days. To avoid riding into the sea, we make a sharp left and its keep the ocean on the right all the way to LA. This stage is among the flattest as we get out legs under us. We enter Santa Cruz from the north and ride past some of the worlds most famous and fiercely local surf breaks. The Lost Boys was filmed here in 1987 and if all goes well, there will be no vampires among us when we wake after a night in this classic California surf town.
